Gwen Jorgensen and Lukas Verzbicas (USA) winners of The 2012 Banyoles ITU World Cup

The 2012 Banyoles ITU Triathlon World Cup, the fourth stop on the ITU World Cup circuit, started off today at 9:45 am with 40 women competing for the gold. The first participant to get out of the water was Lucy Hall (GBR) together with the highly acclaimed Banyoles triathlete Carolina Routier.

The girls managed a great distance from their followers over the 40km bike section and despite their untimely fall in Round 3 they still made it approximately two minutes before the next big group, which was led by the Australians Erin Densham and Ashleigh Gentle, Andrea Hewitt (NZL) and Gwen Jorgensen (USA).

The final round started off with Densham (AUS), Gentle (AUS) and Jorgensen (USA) fighting hard for the podium. Hewitt (NZL), a favorite for this race, was by then well behind. Finally, Jorgensen took the lead in the final seconds (1:59:39) and she outraced Densham (1:59:55) and Gentle (2:00:02).
